Darlene Okpo is a NYC native and educator with a passion for books and reading, who has been spearheading the design and development of educational spaces for many years. The name Adanne Bookshop was inspired by her mother's nickname (which means "her mother's daughter" in Igbo), who has always encouraged her to read since she was young.
Adanne Bookshop is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible space for readers to discover, explore, and appreciate books written by authors of color. Adanne Bookshop strives to be a vibrant and welcoming hub of knowledge, creativity, and understanding in our community. Through our carefully curated selection of books, we hope to inspire and empower readers to broaden their perspectives and foster meaningful conversations. Our mission is to empower black individuals, evident not only by our book selection but the products we offer, including our black-owned body oil brand and tote bags. The shop also frequently hosts events such as author readings, book signings, and community discussions to bring people together and foster a love for literature.

Immaculate vibes. Great community spot. The owner, Darlene, was so sweet and welcoming. They had sold out of the book I was looking for and she said she could order it for me immediately. Also learned they have great workshops like ones for plants, and she’s revamping the space in the back to make an awesome reading / hang out space. Already can’t wait to go back.
